A new grave - free of charge- can be obtained by any Sofia resident or foreign citizen who has died in Sofia.
For this purpose, the new cemetery in the area of "Bankya"- "Poleto" was opened in the summer of 2016 to accommodate the growing needs of the expanding capital.
At first glance it seems far, but in fact the area is almost immediately after the sign of Bankya on the old road from Sofia, just a few kilometers from the ring road. You can get there by well-built roads and road junctions. In the new cemetery itself there is a Ritual Hall, it is plotted, the lanes are prepared for asphalting and there is a strict traffic regime. For those wishing to have an autopsy of their deceased loved ones, it is necessary to have it done either at the grave or at the neighborhood church before transport to the cemetery.
Of course, until the expiry of the sanitary period / 8 years / the relatives of the first buried in the grave can build a permanent grave marker / tombstone/ and pay the "perpetual fee", which is currently 570 BGN. In this way the heirs can use the place as a "family" one.
The burial places in Malashevtsi Cemetery Park and Bakurena Fabrika Cemetery Park are exhausted, as well as the rest of the capital's cemeteries.

On the Saturday before Lent in 2017, the date is February 18 and is exactly one week before the beginning of Lent. The date changes each year and is eight weeks before Easter. Along with the obligatory wheat, breadcrumbs and red wine, cheese and eggs are distributed. Meat and cheese as well as pies and small sweets may also be included in the offerings. All these things are given in memory of our deceased loved ones, and we remember to clean the graves and light a candle on them. We don't have to litter the cemetery with food which the animals then spread in the alleys. It is enough to hand to people who happen to pass by and mention the Name of our loved one with the words "God Forgive Him". This first of the year Souls' Day is important and should be celebrated by all believers, regardless of the snow-covered graves.

The Archangel's Supper is one of the three major feasts and is known as the Great Supper. It is also called Archangel's Supper, Rangel's Supper, and Hrangel's Supper. Архангелова задушница ни припомня за грижите на божиите ангели за покойниците, за душите на най-близките ни, които са напуснали този свят. Along with this, Archangel's Supper is especially dedicated to the fallen warriors. That is why it is sometimes also called "men's stew".
Archangel's Souls is celebrated on the first Saturday before the great Orthodox Christian feast Archangel's Day. The reason for this is that Saturday is set aside as a day of the dead.
In every Orthodox church on Archangel's Souls' Day a communal memorial service is held for the deceased. People pray for the soul of the dead and light candles. As is known, the candle is a symbol of our faith, while the flame personifies the immortality of souls.
The graves of the relatives are visited on the soul-feast. The respective grave is cleaned, decorated with flowers and incense is burnt. The incense symbolizes the sincere prayer coming from the soul, and the flowers - the goodness and virtues of the deceased. According to former traditions, the oldest woman would sprinkle the grave with red wine. The ritual of pouring the wine began from the place where the head of the deceased was located by making three circles to the left along the edge of the grave.
The meal on Archangel's Day
As on other feasts, on Archangel's Supper common meals are made. Since Archangel's Souls' Day is the last souls' day of the year, seven different dishes are arranged on the common table in the cemetery park (it would be best to have among them those that were the favourites of the deceased). The idea is that the seven different dishes will figuratively 'hear' the blessings of the dead in the coming Christmas fast. The first bite is placed on the ground, and the first sip of the ritual wine is poured on the ground and the deceased are mentioned with the words "God forgive". Tradition dictates that food be distributed. The distribution on Archangel's Supper may include sweets, candy, fruit, boiled chicken, wine. The Christian sense of empathy and solidarity contributes to the fact that, in addition to loved ones, food is also distributed to people around neighboring graves, even if they are strangers. The Archangel's Souls' Day distribution traditionally includes wine, boiled wheat, cakes (or bread), chicken, lamb or meat in general, small sweets, candy, apples and other fruit, cake, but you can actually give whatever you wish. The wheat symbolizes the resurrection, the bread and wine the remembrance of Christ's sacrifice for us.
The Archangel's Supper is an expression of the Christian belief in the immortality of the soul and the resurrection of the dead.

The temple "St. Seventy" is one of the most representative and beautiful churches in our capital. Its history began in the 16th century, when Sofia was one of the important cities of the Ottoman Empire in Europe.
The building was erected in 1528 as a mosque by the famous Ottoman architect Koja Mimar Sinan Agha, who is believed to be from a Christian family of Asia Minor. The mosque is called "Koja Dervish Mehmed Pasha" and Sinan built it on the orders of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent or the Lawgiver. It was named after the grand vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha. The area on which the mosque was located belonged to the Rila Monastery and there was a metoch. It should be stressed that the place is associated with many old Christian traditions. Thus, during excavations in 1901, the remains of an old Christian temple from the V-VI century were discovered. In turn, these Christian traditions are based on even older pagan cults of antiquity, and according to archaeological research, the Christian church of the 5th-5th centuries was built on a shrine to Asclepius, who in ancient Greek mythology was known as a healer god.
The mosque built by Sinan became famous by the name of the Black Mosque. The reason for this name is the dark granite from which its minaret is made.
After the Liberation the Mosque was converted into a Church
In the 19th century Sofia was the victim of a very strong earthquake. The mosque collapsed and was abandoned. After the liberation of Bulgaria in 1878 the building was used as a military warehouse and later as a prison. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the faith returned to the former mosque, which was converted into a church between 1901 and 1903. The church was consecrated on 27 July 1903. This date is designated by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church as the Day of the Succession of St. Clement Ohridski and the Day of the Holy Seventy - Saints Cyril and Methodius and their disciples and followers Clement, Nahum, Gorazd, Sava and Angelarius. It is this day that is also celebrated as the temple feast of the Church of St. The feast of the Church of the Theotokos is also a feast of the Church of the Seventy.
During the reconstruction of the mosque into a church, the black granite minaret was demolished. The madrasah, located on the site of the present garden in front of the church, was also removed and the corner domes, the bell tower and the narthex were completed. The reconstruction project was designed by the architects Yordan Milanov and Petko Momchilov. The iconostasis in the church is the work of Debora masters of the Filippov family. In the courtyard of the church, Petko Karavelov is buried, He is the brother of the writer Lyuben Karavelov and the father of Laura Karavelova - the wife of the poet Yavorov. Petko Karavelov was among the most prominent Bulgarian post-liberation politicians. He was one of the leaders of the Liberal Party and later of the Democratic Party. He was prime minister several times. In this post he played a key role in achieving one of the greatest political successes in the new history of our country - the Unification of Bulgaria. Next to Petko Kravelov died his wife - Elena Karavelova, who for decades was among the most influential women in Bulgaria. Their grave is located behind the church.
Oppello In St. Seventy
The Church "St. Sedmochislenitsi" is located in the center of our capital. It is located in the small but significant for Sofia garden between the streets "Tsar Ivan Shishman", "Graf Ignatiev", "6th September" and "General Parensov". The Kiparis Funeral Agency organizes and performs church services in the temple, which with its location and history is an extremely suitable place for these rites. The wide park and the pedestrian zone suggest the possibility of gathering many people in the church area. The church building also provides ample space for all mourners and guests to gather inside. Under the dome of the church, large tables can be used for the arrangement of the distribution kits. The clergy are some of the most revered and respected clergy in the city. They are the ones we see most often on television at the services of Bulgaria's celebrities.
It is customary to have three priests perform the ceremony, which is rare and adds the necessary solemnity to the ceremony. All this is complemented by a professional church choir.
More information about the temple can be found in:
According to the new draft ordinance for the cemetery parks in Sofia, every citizen will be obliged to maintain the burial place of his deceased relatives at his own expense. This can be done either with their own forces or using the services of a licensed company that is registered with the cemetery park.
Attention Unfair Contractors
Unfortunately, a common phenomenon in Sofia cemetery parks is that the relatives of the deceased are met by organized groups that extort citizens for services related to the maintenance of the gravesites, which on the one hand are at inflated prices, on the other - are poorly executed or no work at all has been done on the grave site. Citizens are usually made to give an advance against which they are given a mobile phone number or a fake business card. Then either nothing is performed on the grave or they are blackmailed for more money. In such a situation, the best solution is to either not enter into conversation with these people or to simply and clearly tell them that the grave site in question is maintained by a licensed agency.
Use a Reputable Funeral Agency for Grave Site Maintenance
Well-organized funeral agencies offer properly calculated annual subscriptions for grave site maintenance. These subscriptions fully meet the needs of the people. The subscriptions are fully in line with the financial capabilities of the people in today's crisis conditions.
It is recommended that this type of service be tied to a written contract that, when presented to the municipal authorities, transfers the responsibility of maintaining the burial site to the licensed company.
Kiparis Funeral Agency is registered with the Municipal Enterprise Cemetery Parks as a company carrying out funeral and stonecutting activities. In line with the new regulation, we at Kiparis Funeral Agency offer such contracts, according to which, in addition to relieving citizens from the daily administrative burdens, we also ensure the visualization of the work on the maintenance of the gravesites, through periodic daily photographs that show the current state of the gravesite and the work carried out on its maintenance.
Maintenance could include weekly, monthly and seasonal cleaning or landscaping of the grave site with its adjacent walkways.
Periodic inspections are made of the condition of the headstone structure and casual service recommendations are made by the company's stonemasons.
The emblematic for the ancient history of our capital church "St. Sofia" is a convenient place to perform the funeral of the deceased with relatives and friends living in the broad center of Sofia. The funeral in the church saves them the painful journey to the cemetery park. The setting, steeped in the past centuries, predisposes for a more solemn send-off of the deceased, be he famous or a more ordinary person. Cypress Funeral Home has been a long-time partner of the church and enjoys a good reputation in the parish.
The Church "St. Sofia Church is famous for its ancient tombs, revealing the rich burial tradition of the former inhabitants of Sofia. The tomb of Honorius, located in the foundations of our capital's landmark temple, is among the most glamorous monuments associated with funerary rites. Of course, today, in modern Sofia, funerary rites are considerably more modest and practical. They are mainly made of concrete structures, and in their more luxurious versions they are clad in granite. The exception, however, are the above-ground tombs, which require greater resources. Various such examples can be found in cemetery grounds. They are made according to classical technology and represent reduced forms of dwellings.
While in their ancient version the tombs we see in the foundations of the temple of St. Sophia are made of red single bricks, the tombs on two levels stand out among the new ideas. In these, two burials can take place in a single burial place without waiting for the sanitary period of 8 years after the first burial. In their execution, the burial site is dug 1 meter deeper than the standard grave. The tomb, which is one metre deep, is constructed and a second tomb is built on top of the tomb for a possible subsequent burial. The advantages of the tomb are that it protects the coffin of the deceased from direct contact with the earth. The Cypress Funeral Agency executes all types of tombs after a technical project approved by the client, as well as securing the issuance of a building line by the municipality for the construction of the tomb.
With the growth of Sofia , which is almost 2 million people the need for new cemetery plots is growing every day .
Cemetery park Bakurena factory in which until the spring of 2014 Sofia Municipality gave free burial places to the citizens of Sofia has run out.
At the moment the new cemetery plots are in Malashevski cemetery free of charge for the first eight years , after the construction of a monument ( permanent grave marker) we get the right to pay the fee - use of a grave site in perpetuity , which at the current date is 570 leva. There are other options for periodic payment of the grave use fee, for example every 15 years, but there the risk of missing the deadline and being charged interest is very high.
Conditions for Obtaining a Free New Grave Site According to the Provision of the Metropolitan Municipality
Address registration at the last address of the deceased in one of the metropolitan districts and inability to use a family grave ( existing ). Sometimes , the impossibility is due to the unexpired sanitary period . With the sanitary period /which according to the ordinance of the city of Sofia of the HIE from one burial to the next is eight years / coincides with the time in which the municipality , allows us to use the grave free of charge.
Exceptions are the neighbourhoods with their own cemeteries:
Upper Bath
Boyana
Simeonovo
Hostile
Kremikovtzi, etc.
They also require address registration.
The Central Sofia Cemetery , which is a monument of culture has a separate plot in which burials are carried out in new graves of personalities who have made a great contribution to public life and culture of the country .
For people whose beliefs allow cremation there is the possibility of paid urn niches in the area of Central Sofia Cemetery and Bakurena Factory Cemetery Park.
Orthodox Cemetery Park "St. Archangel Michael" - kv. Boyana also offers paid new burial places. The luxurious surroundings also suggest higher prices for the burial places.
The recent trend has been to transport the deceased and bury them in the cemeteries of their birthplaces . This practice was enshrined in one of the many bills on funeral activities.

This is one of the four feast days of the year on which a memorial is made for the deceased. In 2014, Cherry Souls is on June 7 (the Saturday before Pentecost). In addition to wheat, which is a symbol of the resurrection, wine, a symbol of Christ's blood, cherries, which are the first fruit of the year, are given at the tomb. The flame of our lit candle symbolizes immortality. And the burning of incense, an expression of pure prayer, emphasizes our reverence for all those who have gone from us. The flowers offered at the gravestone also express our respect for our ancestors.
