The Funeral of Bowser (1850-1920)

According to the diary of General Dimitar Mustakov

Introduction

James David Boucher is an Irish journalist, correspondent in the Balkans, advocate for the Bulgarian cause and the idea of a federation of Balkan nations. Boucher died in Bulgaria. Bowser's funeral became a major event. He is buried near the Rila Monastery.

Dimitar Mihailov Mustakov was a Bulgarian officer, Major General of the General Staff, a participant of the Balkan (1912-1913), Inter-Allied (1913) and World War I (1915-1918). After the death of Bowser Mustakov was appointed part of the Committee for the organization of the funeral of the distinguished Irishman.

The diary of Gen. Mustakov's diary, which also describes the burial of Boucher, is kept in the Central State Archives at the State Archives Agency.

For the present reference the original archival material (CDA, f. 1870k, op. 1, a. f. 1, l. 71-75) and the very recent publication of the Irish amateur historian Martin O' Brien - O'Brien, M. News of the death of Bowser and the establishment of a committee to arrange Bowser's funeral

30. XII. - Thursday. And today there is nothing special. At 9:30 I got to the House to see Karavanevsky and talk to him about the Baev scholarship, D. There I learned that this morning Baucher had died. He was told so by an usher in the audience. I felt sorry for this Bulgarophile whom fate had sent to die in his beloved Bulgaria, which he defended in England with such ardor.

[...]

Tomorrow at 9:30 I am being summoned by Sarafov of the Foreign Office to participate in the Commission on the Protocol of the Baucher Funeral. I'll go even though I have the sniffles.

[...]

Saturday, January 21. I was at the service. The king, the diplomats and other officials were present. In the church I talked with Bishop Boris about the funeral of Bowser according to our custom. Sarafov from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was also there. He told me to write him an official letter and he would discuss the matter with the bishops. Then, on behalf of the Commission, to send the letter to the Holy Synod and wait for a decision. The prayer service ended well and the choir sang as if at a great concert... The King was kind to everyone. [...] We discussed [with Mayor Ivanov and Ivan, the bodyguard of Bowscher - ed.] going tomorrow to the Rila Monastery to choose a place for the tomb, because Ivan knew it - he should point it out. We agreed to leave tomorrow at 7:00.

[...]

The abbot met us at the monastery and we immediately went to the valley of the Brushnitsa River, where, according to Ivan, Bowscher wanted to be buried. The road is very bad and I don't believe Bowser liked the place. We chose a spot by a rock by the creek and returned.

[...]

The ceremony in Sofia and the burial of Bowscher near the Rila Monastery

The funeral was announced to take place on January 5.

[...]

The funeral started at 2 o'clock [in Sofia - ed.]. Minister Omarchevski, Atanas Radulov, Tsanko Bakalov, Dobrovich and other dignitaries were present [...] The procession lasted until 5 o'clock and we stopped in Knyazhevo. The ambulance and the truck left Knyazhevo at 6 o'clock. All the cars were in Knyajevo at 7 o'clock - 7 cars in total. The truck and ambulance were decorated with wreaths - a beautiful sight. We travelled to Radomir and Samokov. Everywhere they welcomed us even outside the towns.

[...]

We arrived at the monastery at 5 o'clock. Vladika Neofit welcomed us with the clergy. After the service, the body was taken to the church, the prayer "Svetlaya Memoria" was read and the coffin was brought out for the funeral. Archimandrite Stefan held a highly patriotic speech at the grave. Then, on behalf of the Sofia Municipality, the Deputy Mayor delivered a long and contentless speech. The body was buried almost in the dark.

CREMATION - HISTORICAL REFERENCE

Cremation by burning at the stake was introduced in the so-called "Western world" by the Greeks around 1000 BC. They probably adopted cremation from some northern peoples. Certainly this burial custom is connected with the horrors of wars. According to the hypothesis in question, the bodies of warriors killed on foreign territory could be given a dignified burial in their homeland in the presence of their families and fellow citizens. The corpses of those killed are burned on the battlefield. The ashes are then collected and sent to the homeland for ceremonial burial. Although burial in the ground is preserved, cremation becomes so closely associated with valor and manly virtue, patriotism and military glory, that it is considered the only fitting end to an epic life filled with heroism and adventure.

Cremation in "Iliad"

Homer's poem The Iliad clearly shows how complex and important cremations were. Zeus himself forces Achilles to hand over Hector's body to his father so that he, Priam, king of Troy, can cremate him in a royal manner. The greater the hero, the greater the pyre. Achilles "sets the pattern" by organizing a huge pyre for his friend Patroclus. Achilles himself is cremated even more magnificently after his death - in the "garb of the gods" after 17 days of mourning. When the flames were extinguished with wine, his bones were bathed in oil and wine and placed in a golden urn with those of Patroclus. Lavish funeral feasts and funeral games follow. A large tomb was erected for him on a promontory above the Helespontes, the present Dardanelles.

Cremation in Rome

The Romans followed Greek and Trojan rites in cremating their military heroes. In the poem "Aeneid," the brilliant Roman poet Virgil scornfully rejects the customs of the "unfortunate" Latins, contrasting them with those of the Roman Trojan ancestors. Virgil describes a 12-day truce declared so that the two armies could cremate their dead warriors. The Latins then burned many people without ritual. They did not even count the corpses. Later they just pile the bones up, covering them with earth. The Romans, on the other hand, observe all traditions. They cover the pyre with leaves and frame it with cypresses. After the pyre burns, the warriors, raising battle cries, circle it and throw into the dying fire trophies taken from the slain Latins. The Romans pour animal blood on the flames and when the fire is extinguished, wash the bones with wine and place them in urns. Cremation became such a symbol of social status in Rome that building and renting space in a columbarium became a profitable business.

What is Columbarium?

Columbarium, also columbarium lit. pigeon-house from columba - pigeon is a type of ancient Roman burial chamber with superimposed niches designed for the urns after burial by cremation. This name was given because of the visual similarity of these chambers to a pigeon loft.

However, by about 100, cremations in the Roman Empire had ceased. Perhaps this is explained by the spread of Christianity. Cremation was not explicitly taboo among Christians of the time. But it was discouraged because of the pagan associations it created. And because of the fear that it might interfere with the promised resurrection of the body and its reunion with the soul. But there is also a purely practical interpretation. According to him, at that time cremations in Rome threatened to lead to a serious shortage of wood, which was burned in the pyres.

Cremation in the Middle Ages in Europe and Asia

Cremation in medieval Europe

In the Early Middle Ages, Viking pagans favored cremation, believing it helped free the spirit from the flesh. They also believed it protected the dead from harming the living. These pagan practices could be compared to Greek and Roman epic cremations. After the Icelandic conversion in 1000, cremation became rare in Western Europe until the 19th century. Exceptions were made for emergency situations. Thus, during the outbreak of the plague epidemic in 1656, the bodies of 60,000 victims were burned in Naples in one week.

Cremation in Asia

In India and some other countries where the custom is ancient, cremation was and is preferred. It is the wish of all pious Hindus to be cremated in Varanasi. The banks of the river Ganges in this sacred city are covered with marble slabs on which pyres are erected. The remains are then handed over to the waters of the Ganges. In some Asian countries , cremation was only available to a privileged handful. In Tibet, it was usually reserved for the higher lamas. In Laos it is for those who die "in happiness," that is, of natural causes at the end of a life filled with peace and prosperity. The cremation ceremonies on the island of Bali in Indonesia were extremely colourful. On a "lucky" day, the bodies of the worthy, who had previously been temporarily buried or embalmed, were carried to a tall decorative tower made of wood and bamboo and cremated. Forty-two days later, a second tower, with images instead of bodies, is burned to help the soul on its way to the heavenly heights. The ashes of the towers, like those of the bodies, are scattered on the water.

Cremations in Modern and Contemporary History

The revival of interest in cremation in Europe and the United States began in 1874. Then Queen Victoria's surgeon, Sir Henry Thompson, published his book Cremation. He also organized the English Cremation Society. Cremation quickly began to enjoy popularity on both sides of the Atlantic. It was embraced by many doctors and sanitary officials who worried that crowded cemeteries were becoming increasingly dangerous. In 1876, the first crematorium was built in the United States. Five years later, the New York Cremation Society was organized. The popularity of this practice in the United States, however, for many years was not very great. There in the 1970s, only about 8% of the dead were cremated. Cremation is more readily accepted in some European and Asian countries. In England, Germany and Denmark, for example, it is more than 50 percent. In Japan, where cremation was illegal until 1875, the practice became almost universal.

Cremation
Modern cremation

As the shortage of cemetery space in urban areas becomes more acute, cremation is beginning to become the primary form of burial. Many Protestant churches actively support it. The Catholic Church declares that it is not forbidden. At the same time, the Orthodox and Jewish religions continue to reject it. There are also legal objections to cremation. They say it would not allow investigations into unsolved crimes to proceed. But the answer to these arguments is continuous improvements in techniques and standards in investigators' methodology.

Cemetery owners and funeral agencies are also weakening their opposition. The reason is that cremation is proving to be no less profitable than more traditional methods of burial activity.

FUNERAL AGENCY: EVERYDAY LIFE

Photographer Scott Palmer grew up in Gowrie, Iowa, USA. As a youngster, he was often taken to school in the hearse of his family, who owned a funeral home. Death was a part of his everyday life.

" The funeral agency became a second home for me, I felt quite comfortable in it," the now 34-year-old photographer said in 2011. There's a deep and fascinating beauty to Palmer's work on the day-to-day life of a funeral agency. His photographs have an inexplicable solemnity that compels us to look at them. It draws our gaze even when we want to avert our eyes. Through his specific lighting, Palmer exalts death. His project, Educated by Death, is not intrusive. It looks like a fact, without emotions, feelings and doubts. Just a fact. "Of course, the first reaction of people around you is shock," Palmer says. "But almost immediately after that comes curiosity."

The daily routine of a funeral agency accompanies people's lives every day. But the thousands of workers in this field do their work delicately. They do not thrust themselves into the public spotlight. They take care to solve professional problems without turning them into scandal. That's why Scott Palmer's photography project is so valuable. It excellently represents the difficult but peaceful work that characterizes a funeral agency. His photos reflect the daily activities that accompany people's journey to the afterlife. In the photos we see the group in charge of embalming. We see the collection of antique bottles of preparations that expresses the attitude towards tradition in the funeral business. The photographic project also focuses on the employees at the funeral agency. This is hardly accidental. People are the most important asset in any company or institution.

Autumn Souls in neighbouring Greece and Serbia

In Greece and Serbia, there are Zadushniks that are similar to the Bulgarian Archangel's Zadushnitsa. In both countries they are called Dimitrovdenski Zadushničky. In Serbia the name is Mitrovdanska Zadushnitsa. In Greece, it is called the Psychosabato of Agios Dimitrios. In both countries the date changes every year. But it is always on the Saturday before Dimitrov's Day.

Differences in the traditions of the two countries

The rituals are similar to the Bulgarian ones. Homage is paid to the dead. The graves of relatives are visited. There are differences in dates between the two countries. This is because in Greece they celebrate Dimitrov Day in a new style like in Bulgaria. In Serbia, however, Dimitrovden is in the old style. This year, in Greece, Zadushnitsa was on October 23. In Serbia it is expected to be like in Bulgaria on November 7.

There are more differences. In Greece, it seems that the Dimitrovden Shrovetide has a rather regional character. It is celebrated mainly in Macedonia and Thrace. In Serbia this tradition is spread everywhere. It is also celebrated by the Serbian population that has remained living in the other former Yugoslav republics.

Different explanations for the origin

There are also different explanations for the occurrence of these Suppers. Greek theologians claim that it is associated with the former main livelihood of the population in Thrace and Macedonia. It is about animal husbandry. On St. Dimitrov's Day, cattle breeders descend with their herds from the high mountains to the areas they will winter. Because of their livelihood, they have not been able to honor the dead on the previous two Great Fasts. Thus, gradually, the Dimitrovden Zadushnik expanded and became established in Macedonia and Thrace.

In Serbia, the origin of this Souls' Day is explained differently. It is a tradition imported from Russia. It is associated with the victory of the Moscow prince Dmitry Donskoy over the Tatar commander Mamay on the Kulikovo field in 1380. According to tradition, this became an annual tradition. According to the Serbian Orthodox Church, it is from it that today's Mitrovdanska Zadushnica originated.

Burial - new grave in the Central Sofia Cemetery

The burial places in the parks "Bankya - Poleto Area" "Bakirena Fabrika", "Malashevtsi" and the neighbourhood cemeteries are exhausted.

Burial - new areas for burial places in the CSG

But the Metropolitan Municipality provided new 90 acres for burials. So burial in a new grave in the Central Sofia Cemetery is now possible after 19.10.2020. The asphalted paths for access to the new graves have been built in advance. Signage has also been erected. A model application form of the municipality and a death certificate are quite sufficient for the acquisition of a new grave. The deceased must have had a registered address in one of Sofia's boroughs during his lifetime.

Of course, you can trust the Kiparis Funeral Agency to move the paperwork and arrange the ritual and funeral. The new plot enjoys all the burial amenities of the Central Sofia Cemetery, churches, Ritual Hall, parlours for distribution, communications and parking facilities.

Burial - prices for digging a new grave site

Prices for digging a new grave site have not been raised. They are the same as they were a few years ago in the cemeteries of Bakurena Fabrika, Malashevtsi and Bankya Localities Field. The only additional cost for burial in a new grave is a wooden frame which marks the boundaries of the grave and protects the excavated earth from spillage. This frame is removed the following year of burial. A memorial is then made of marble or granite with a porcelain or engraved photograph and the names of the deceased. Once this "permanent grave marker" is placed, heirs can make the "perpetuity fee" payment. At this date it is still £570.

Burial - maintenance of a new grave

Last but not least, the new grave requires constant maintenance and clearing of volunteer grasses and weeds. With an annual contract of 240BGN an employee of Kiparis Funeral Agency will visit the grave every month and carry out this activity instead of the client.

Kiparis Funeral Agency can also arrange burial in a new burial site in the private cemetery in Boyana. There the acquisition of the grave is free of charge.

When it comes to professional funeral services, the aspect of "funeral prices" is always of great importance to the customer. On the one hand, he wants to be provided with quality and reliable services in relation to funeral arrangements, allowing him to send off his loved one in a dignified manner. On the other hand, however, it is also important that the respective funeral prices meet his current financial capabilities and the means at his disposal. In this sense, the optimal combination between quality and price must be made. In the following lines, we will highlight several criteria by which to evaluate funeral price offers:

After all, the performance of the funeral services in question involves costs in a number of aspects. So we don't recommend that you gamble on an agency whose funeral prices are unrealistically low and don't meet competitive logic. In most cases, such funeral prices mean low quality funeral services, which can completely ruin the send-off of your loved one.
  2. Funeral prices: Being affordable - of course, you shouldn't go to the other extreme either. Namely, appropriate funeral prices to be inflated far more than necessary. Unfair practices of this type will be easily caught by comparing funeral prices at different funeral agencies. Funeral prices should be affordable and allow you to request all the funeral services you need.
  3. Funeral Prices: Be Divided into Economy and Luxury Package - A good practice of agencies in the industry regarding funeral prices is to have them divided into economy and luxury package. This way, you will be able to assess exactly which of the funeral arrangement services you need and request them and only them.

How to recognize reliable funeral services?

The loss of a loved one unfortunately often brings, in addition to pain, a responsibility that we must fulfill immediately. No matter how sad and heartbroken we feel, we must set about arranging a dignified send-off for the person concerned. If you do not have the strength to do this, you could make use of professional mourning services. There are a number of agencies in the industry that offer entire catalogues of this type of service. You just need to find the most suitable one among them, which will not only provide you with mourning services, but also the said mourning services will be quality, reliable and accompanied with adequate treatment to the deceased and his bereaved relatives and friends. Here are a few criteria that will help you recognize reliable funeral services:

Funeral services - 1
Funeral services
  1. Full spectrum of services - we recommend that you go with an agency that is able to provide you with the full spectrum of funeral services needed. This includes funeral services related to the arrangement of all administrative matters, the preparation and transportation of the deceased, as well as the organization of the funeral itself and the welcoming of guests. Quality funeral services are able to provide you with peace of mind and help you get through this difficult time.
  2. Good attitude - the employees of the agency providing you with the relevant mourning services need to be considerate of their duties as well as respectful of your pain and grief. There are quite a few cases where people in this industry dare to raise their tone, haggle over prices or generally have a careless attitude towards funeral arrangements. If you encounter such a thing, we recommend that you immediately abandon the funeral services in question and look for a more reliable agency.
  3. Reasonable prices - of course, there are minimum price levels that are necessary for the respective agency to provide quality funeral services to its clients. In no case, however, should the prices of the funeral services in question be inflated unnecessarily so that they become unaffordable for the average consumer. A good practice for selecting funeral services according to this criterion would be to compare the offers of different agencies. Reliable agencies more generally offer economical and luxurious plans of their mourning services to meet the requirements and financial capabilities of the widest range of people.
  4. Transparency - Transparency is also an important factor when choosing funeral services. Agencies that have their own well maintained website definitely inspire more trust. A website detailing the entire catalogue of funeral services offered, packages of services and their prices. There should also be convenient forms for contacting the relevant agency, for example by phone or email.

When you are faced with a personal tragedy and you need to arrange the funeral of a loved one, the best option to handle this situation is the funeral agency. A reliable mourning agency is capable of arranging the funeral in accordance with all traditions and accepted norms, as well as helping you send the deceased off in the manner he or she deserves. In addition, such an agency will do without any problem with the administrative and bureaucratic issues invariably accompanying the event. Here's some more detailed information on the reasons why using the services of a funeral home is worthwhile:

  1.  Help at a difficult time - first of all, losing a loved one is an extremely difficult time, among the worst ones in life. The pain is particularly intense in the first hours after the death and does not allow a person to think adequately, as well as to engage in any activities. At such a time, a really good mourning agency could provide you with considerable support and help you fulfill your duty towards the deceased. It will handle the funeral arrangements while you are still trying to grasp what has happened and find the strength within yourself to move on.
  2. Complete organization - a reliable funeral agency could provide you with all the services related to the organization of the funeral. Starting from the preparation and transportation of the deceased, going through the arrangement of administrative matters and ending with the funeral itself with all the factors for its proper conduct - place, time, guests, etc. The organization of a funeral is quite a complex task, involving many different activities and commitments. If you do not want to make mistakes that are likely to ruin the whole organization, it would be better to turn to a mourning agency.
  3. The paperwork required - unfortunately, even to conduct a funeral, it is necessary to get a number of documents as well as to settle administrative matters. Taking out a death certificate, registering, reserving a grave space, paying council fees - these are all activities that are mandatory to complete and are likely to make the hours before the funeral itself even more difficult for you. We recommend that you put them in the hands of an agency to save yourself a great deal of additional hassle and complication.
  4. Funeral agency: the manufacture of mourning elements - a good funeral agency will also do the job for you in terms of the necessary mourning elements for the funeral. This includes headstones, mourning wreaths and bouquets, etc. The prompt and efficient services in this aspect of a funeral agency with experience in the industry will greatly facilitate the overall process of arranging the funeral.
  5. Funeral agency: knowledge of traditions - if you have not had to deal with the organization of a funeral, you hardly know all the traditions and rituals accompanying this event. From the memorial service in the church to the ritual breadcrumbs and boiled wheat with breadcrumbs, these and a number of other elements need to be addressed to ensure the deceased is given a dignified send-off. A reliable funeral agency will be aware of the traditions and ensure they are followed during your loved one's funeral.
